RE

Our current learning.

Here is an overview of our current learning for this term.

English

We are focusing on the story of Oliver Twist, using the Oak Academy online lessons to help us structure our learning. Each day we are completing input and activities based on the story to  improve on our sentence construction, inference and use of creative language.

Our spelling and grammar work is being supported by the Oak Academy live lessons as we continue to  work on the spelling rules for Year 5. Children are encouraged to use their Spelling Shed logins to work on their personalised spelling lists.

Maths

We have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes to consider their properties and be able to describe and classify them. We will soon be moving on to look at the topics of angles, are and perimeter.

Children have access to their Times Tables Rockstars accounts and are encouraged to use these daily if possible.

Reading

For our reading work we are using a range of texts and short tasks which allow us to focus on each of the VIPERS skills of vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarising. We continue to pay special attention to vocabulary which is supported by our use of high quality texts both for English with 'Oliver Twist' and as our class reader, (which this term is The Nowhere Emporium by Ross MacKenzie.) Children are encouraged to use their Reading Plus accounts regularly to work on their personalised learning tasks.

Science

States of Matter

  • To group or sort materials into solids, liquids and gases.
  • To observe that some materials change state when heated or cooled.
  • To understand and use the terms evaporation and condensation.
  • To describe solids, liquids and gases

Geography

Our topic this term is Biomes. We are following the Oak Academy Unit for Biomes but I have also included a link to the BBC Bitesize unit.

Biomes are areas of our planet with similar climateslandscapesanimals and plants. What lives in each biome depends on:

  • how warm or cold it is
  • how dry or wet it is
  • how fertile the soil is

The animals in a biome depend upon plants for food. The plants in a biome often also depend upon the animals for spreading pollen and seeds so that new plants can grow. So both plants and animals rely on each other to stay alive

Music

We are looking at compositions and how the building blocks which put them together. This is being supported by the BBC Live Lessons 'Ten Pieces Party.' So far we have considered rhythm and will be moving on to look at melodies and dynamics. Overall this will allow us to start putting together our very own compositions!

Art

In keeping with our thinking about Oliver Twist, we are looking at Victorian art. We are considering the techniques used in pencil sketches to help create tone and shadow. This in turn is linked to a closer look at the work of Leonardo da Vinci who inspired the Victorian passion for light and shade in artwork. We will also be looking at the patterns and print work of William Morris. Ultimately we will celebrate the term's learning by creating a piece which demonstrates or combines one or more of the ideas covered. Below you will find the lessons in Powerpoint format.

PSHE

We are focusing on feelings and emotions as we explore our feelings and ways for managing them in a variety of situations.

PE

In PE we are completing 2 of the 'Youth Sport Trust' 60 second challenges each week. These are a fun ‘compete against yourself’ approach to physical activity with a focus on resilience and perseverance and the aim to achieve bronze, silver or gold medal targets.
