Design and Technology

At New Road School, Design and Technology is taught through a carefully structured and engaging approach that builds skills progressively from EYFS to KS2. In EYFS and KS1, learning is delivered through continuous provision, allowing children to explore Design and Technology concepts through play-based, hands-on experiences. Pupils investigate materials, tools and simple mechanisms independently and with adult support, encouraging creativity, problem-solving and early design thinking. Activities are closely linked to children’s interests, helping them make meaningful connections with what they are learning, the world around them and their own fascinations.  As pupils move into KS2, Design and Technology is taught using the Kapow scheme of work, which provides a clear progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary. Lessons follow the design process of researching, designing, making and evaluating, ensuring pupils develop technical understanding alongside creativity. Kapow supports high-quality teaching through well-sequenced units that cover structures, mechanisms, textiles, food and electrical systems, preparing pupils with practical skills and confidence for future learning.
