EYFS
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum
There are seven areas of learning and development that shape learning in the early years. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for building the children's capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.
These three areas, the prime areas, are:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
These areas lie at the heart of our practice and are a key focus in our daily routines.
The four specific areas in addition to these are:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
At New Road Primary School, we deliver this curriculum through a combination of focused teaching and child-initiated play.
Each area of learning and development is implemented through planned, purposeful play and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activity. During the play based learning, the progress of each child is continually assessed and activities planned to meet all pupil’s individual needs and next steps.
The play based learning approach allows our pupils to learn, practise and apply skills, knowledge and vocabulary.
When involved in their learning we continue to focus on the key characteristic of effective learning: -
- Playing and exploring
- Active learning
- Creating and thinking critically.
We believe that children learn best through first hand experiences so we provide a range of experiences to ignite learning and talk.
