KS1
Key Stage One Curriculum
In KS1 we offer a curriculum that is well planned out, carefully sequenced and designed to meet the needs of all our learners. Child centred and child initiated play is a recognised developmentally appropriate approach. We start this in the EYFS and it is continued into KS1. We balance this with adult-directed teaching and learning to ensure we meet the expectations set out in the National Curriculum. We want our children to be independent, self-motivated, confident, and creative thinkers. Our approach to teaching and learning gives children the opportunities to develop these learning characteristics, providing them with a sense of autonomy and widening personal interests.
The learning environments are essential in creating spaces that engage and motivate children and we have worked hard to ensure the spaces we create provide the opportunities for children to take risks, work collaboratively and develop their communication skills. We also recognise the importance of using outside spaces to deepen learning and engagement, and we use carefully selected resources to encourage being inquisitive and asking questions.
All areas of the curriculum are planned and resourced to support active learning. Whether the children are using freely accessible manipulatives for maths or small world resources to retell familiar stories; being actively engaged in learning is our priority.
