PSHRE (Personal, Social, Health and Relationships Education)

At New Road, PSHRE (Personal, Social, Health and Relationships Education) is an important part of helping children grow into confident, kind and responsible individuals. It supports their wellbeing, relationships and understanding of the world around them. Children learn through a mixture of structured lessons and everyday experiences.  In the younger years, circle time gives children a safe space to talk about feelings, friendships and how to get along with others. Across the school, we explore themes such as:

  • Building positive friendships and relationships
  • understanding identity and celebrating differences
  • Learning how to stay safe online
  • Introducing RSE vocabulary early in an age‑appropriate way so children grow up confident and informed.

We use floor books to capture children’s ideas, discussions and activities in KS2. These books show how their understanding develops over time. In EYFS and KS1, staff use Evidence Me to record observations and learning.

PSHRE is not limited to a weekly lesson. The values we teach, including honesty, respect, responsibility and kindness, are woven into everyday school life. Children practise these skills during play, group work, assemblies and daily routines, helping them apply what they learn in real situations. We assess children’s learning from their contributions to discussions, their work and reflections in the floor books and through Pupil voice, which is what the children say about their learning. This holistic approach helps us understand how well our children develop the social and emotional skills they need.
